I am not talking about the dreams at night but rather the dreams of what you want. Kids dream all the time; I want to be a fireman or fly into space or dance on stage. When did we stop dreaming and why is it important now more than ever?
I was introduced to a book The Dream Manager by Mathew Kelly. It’s relatively short only about 150 pages but so profound! The premise is about a company with a 400% turnover and usually the upper management just wants to throw money to get them to stay. Instead they did a survey to ask what was needed. It seems many of the workers didn’t drive and worked at night, which meant relying on public transportation could be a problem. The company created a shuttle service to take workers to and from work. This began to make a difference but the most profound change came about because of a Dream Manager. This manager asked people what they dreamed of having then helped create a plan to help them achieve it. It wasn’t a handout they worked the plans. The dreams ranged from having a home, a car, travel, to a myriad of large and small dreams including for this company learning both English and Spanish as well as taking classes to improve themselves. It wasn’t just for front line but throughout the company. It reduced turnover to 50%. The concept has been shared with real organizations with great results
When was the last time you dreamed? When did anyone ask you about your dreams? When did you ask others? When did you ask your significant other, parents, siblings, children, friends? There is an exercise in the book in which you write your Dream List and it covers 12 categories Physical, Emotional, Intellectual, Spiritual, Psychological, Material, Professional, Financial, Creative, Adventure, Legacy, and Character. I have started doing this myself and shared it with clients. The objective is 100 dreams of any size. In the book they describe how they use it to help teams improve performance by the members being more authentic.
I’ll let you in on a few of mine. in the creative. I want to get back to playing the piano, in the physical, really learn golf. and now go to the gym more often. For professional I want to grow the business and create passive income through videos. My legacy as you could tell from the first story is my grand kids, but it’s also my clients and knowing they achieved what they wanted. Got the idea?
This is more than a vision board because as you create the dreams you begin to create the plan to achieve it short or long term big or small.
When you use this with employees, your staff becomes engaged. This begins with the concept that the business is the best version of itself and to do so the employees need to be their best versions and achieve their dreams.
